Master Of Science In Forensic Infrastructure Engineering

Programme Synopsis

Master of Science in Forensic Infrastructure Engineering (CEEC708) is a program that focuses on strengthening knowledge and improving the skills of investigating structural and infrastructure failure cases. In order to produce graduates who can master knowledge in the field of forensic engineering, the curriculum formed has taken into account all the basic and advanced knowledge required to become a forensic engineer in the field of civil engineering (infrastructure). This program exposes students to the latest technology and modern software used in the process of investigating the causes of failure. The application of elements of law and code of ethics in certain courses can also provide students with an understanding of the judicial process and professional liability when litigation occurs because of a lawsuit due to a dispute that cannot be resolved as the consequence from the structural/infrastructural failure. The curriculum emphasizes on critical thinking which encourages graduates to generate new solutions in whatever challenges they faced

Course Synopsis

Semester 1
COURSE CODE COURSE NAME CREDIT UNIT COURSE SYNOPSIS
FIE701 Research Methodology 3 Problem solving skills are vital requirements for professionals. Innovative knowledge is created when complex theoretical and technical issues are solved. This course introduces the students to the principle and techniques of scientific research process to solve problems. The focus is on developing the ability in identifying problems, critiquing current research in the area, formulating and writing a problem statement together with the research questions and objectives to address the research problem. Following to that the students should be able to design the required experimental procedures and the expected results. Finally, the students need to write and present their research activities.
FIE702 Occupational Safety and Health Management 3 According to the OSHA Act every employer has a legal obligation to furnish employment (work) and a place of employment (workplace) free from known hazards that could cause serious injury or death.
This course is designed to give some ideas to help meet that obligation and apply effective management principles to the
FIE703 Introduction to Forensic Infrastructure Engineering 3 The course deals with the introduction to forensic engineering involving the construction industry with incidences of structural and infrastructural failure which usually lead to criminal/civil litigations. The probable mechanisms, root causes and consequent hazards of failure would be explored to expain the incidences as much as the established facts would allow but permitting contending views. Furthermore, students would be expected to develop professional attributes involving technical competency, seasoned communication skills, self-assured in the face of challenges and ethical integrity.
FIE704 Risk Analysis and Management 3 The emphasis of this course is to understand the basic concepts of risk analysis and the relationship between probability theory and modeling, risk analysis, and decision analysis. The course intend to interpret probability and probabilistic modeling, in the evaluation of risk and learn how to understand and interpret the basic tools of risk analysis and also the financial issues surrounding the use of risk analysis in decision making.
FIE705 Geomechanics of Infrastructure Failures 3 The emphasis of this course is on the application of fundamental concepts of soil mechanics to be used as forensic tools in the investigation of infrastructure failures. Case studies with different failure mechanisms will be used to demonstrate the problem solving in forensic geotechnical engineering. Each case will be described in detail and back analyzed using relatively simple soil mechanic concept. Learning from failure will allow the students to be aware of historical errors leading to costly failures, as well as factors contributing to those failures.
