Summary of Research Work:

In the developing countries where the demographic trends are rapidly escalating, the requirement for freshwater or clean water also becomes a pressing immediate concern.  Water pollution happens when a body of water is negatively affected of large amounts of materials and chemicals added into it. The most severe effects of water pollution are infectious diseases, which commonly occur in developing countries, where there is a problem with sanitation. Waterborne diseases occur once a microorganism that carries diseases is spread through a body of water. “These include typhoid, intestinal parasites, and most of the enteric and diarrheal diseases caused by bacteria, parasites, and viruses. Among the most serious parasitic diseases are amoebiasis, giardiasis, ascariasis, and hookworm. Our Special Interest Group (SIG) tends to overcome this problem by focusing in developing a new portable multispectral optical sensor system which able to measure total suspended solids (TSS) concentration in water samples. In parallel, we are also working in developing a novel algorithm that precisely correlate pollutant concentration with the scattered radiation. The optical sensing system is objectively being designed to measure scattered radiation from water samples. This study will used infrared LEDs (890 and 875nm) and visible LEDs (626 and 660nm) as sensing emitters and one silicon photodiode is used as detector.  Two convex lenses will be used for focusing the radiations; also an electronic circuit is being designed. The sensors will be calibrated for measuring total suspended solids concentrations between the range of 110 and 500 mg/l. The results will exhibit the correlation between the radiation values and the total suspended solids in the water samples. The proposed research falls in line with the government’s stance of promoting the green technology which may help to conserve the natural environment and resources, that minimizes the negative impact of human activities. The optical sensing system will be further utilized to study other substances such as blood, urine and medicine.
