AKADEMI PENGAJIAN BAHASA

 

 



Pada awal penubuhannya ia dikenali dengan nama Pusat Bahasa. Ia mula beroperasi pada tahun 1996 selaras dengan penubuhan UiTM Pulau Pinang di Permatang Pasir dengan menawarkan kursus-kursus bahasa pada peringkat diploma kepada pelajar-pelajar di Jabatan Elektrik dan Mekanikal. Pada tahun 2002, nama Pusat Bahasa telah diubah kepada Akademi Pengajian Bahasa. Akademi Pengajian Bahasa mempunyai perkhidmatan menyediakan kursus-kursus Kemahiran Bahasa kepada penduduk setempat di sekitar Seberang Perai dan Pulau Pinang. Kursus-kursus seperti Bahasa Inggeris, Mandarin dan Arab ditawarkan. Pakej-pakej bahasa juga ditawarkan bagi memenuhi kehendak badan-badan kerajaan dan swasta.

Sebagai pusat kecemerlangan pengajaran dan pembelajaran pelbagai bahasa. Setiap pelanggan adalah utama dan istimewa. Kami beriltizam menunaikan kewajipan untuk menjamin keberkesanan serta kelangsungan pengajaran dan pembelajaran yang berkualiti dan berfaedah kepada pelajar, kakitangan UiTM, industri, organisasi dan masyarakat.

Merupakan sebuah akademi yang ulung dan menawarkan khidmat bahasa berkualiti kepada individu dan badan korporat selaras dengan aspirasi sebuah negara dinamik.

 

OBJEKTIF

  • Membentuk unit-unit pakar dalam bidang-bidang khusus.
  • Meningkatkan kemahiran dan kelayakan tenaga pengajar.
  • Menghasilkan graduan yang mempunyai keyakinan dan sifat-sifat murni dalam penggunaan bahasa.
  • Membantu siswa siswi dalam penggunaan bahasa semasa proses pembelajaran di UiTM.
  • Melahirkan siswa siswi yang menguasai pelbagai bahasa untuk berkomunikasi dan berinteraksi dengan cekap dalam kerjaya dan sosial.
  • Mendedahkan tenaga pengajar kepada metodologi dan teknologi pengajaran dan pembelajaran bahasa terkini.
  • Mewujudkan hubungan profesional dan akademik di antara tenaga pengajar universiti ini dengan institusi pengajian tinggi lain dan industri kawasan utara serta luar negara.
  • Menawarkan kursus-kursus bahasa kepada masyarakat setempat dan luar.

Project 1 - LINK-IT

A physical board game namely Learn, Improve & Know Important Transitions or LINK-IT is invented by an Innovative and Creative Team of Academy of Language Studies, UiTM Penang Branch, which is led by Dr Mah Boon Yih with his team members including Nur Afiqah Ab. Latif, Noraziah Mohd Amin, Che Nooryohana Zulkifli, Raja Rosila Raja Berahim, Melati Desa, and Noor Azli Affendy Lee. On 18 April 2020, LINK-IT won a Silver Award in International Invention and Innovative Competition (InIIC), Series 1/2020 with the theme ‘Changing Lives in Brilliant Ways’ under the Professional – Social Sciences category (A1).

Project 2 - UiTM WESLLAP 

The UiTM Webitors team from the Academy of Language Studies (APB), Universiti Teknologi MARA, Cawangan Pulau Pinang (UiTMCPP) has managed to win a Silver Award in the recent International Invention & Innovative Competition (InIIC Series 1/2020) on 18 April 2020. With the combination efforts made by 4 UiTMCPP APB English lecturers (Noor Azli bin Affendy Lee, Dr Mah Boon Yih, Suzana Ab. Rahim and Marni Jamil), the UiTM Webitors managed to enter their own innovation called the UiTM Webitors’ English for Second Language Learners’ Autonomy Platform (UiTM WESLLAP) under the Professional – Social Sciences category (A1).

 

 

ENGLISH LANGUAGE 

PRE DIPLOMA

ENGLISH FOR PRE DIPLOMA I (ELC010)

This course is designed to improve the proficiency level of pre-diploma students. The course aims to do this through an integration of reading, listening, writing and speaking skills with appropriate consideration given to grammar, using a variety of materials.

ENGLISH FOR PRE DIPLOMA II (ELC020)

This course is designed to reinforce the language skills learnt in ELC010. The target group is pre-diploma students who do not manage to enter the Diploma programme. It focuses on the four language components which are reading, writing, listening and speaking. The teaching of grammar is integrated into the four language components.

ENGLISH FOR PRE DIPLOMA (ELC030)

This course is designed to improve the language ability of pre-diploma students whose proficiency is at elementary level. It focuses on the four language components which are reading, writing, listening and speaking. The teaching of grammar is integrated into the four language components.


DIPLOMA

INTEGRATED LANGUAGE SKILLS I (ELC121)

This course is designed to build the listening, speaking and reading skills to help students perform effectively and competently in the social and academic contexts. This is done through the integration of language skills with an emphasis on listening. It aims to raise students’ proficiency to the intermediate level. This course focuses on enhancing the students’ abilities to use the language by exploiting a variety of materials in varied situations. Appropriate consideration is given to the development of higher-level grammatical construction, vocabulary expansion and extensive reading activities which are intended to increase students’ lexical density.

INTEGRATED LANGUAGE SKILLS II (ELC151)

This course is designed to help students become confident and independent readers. Specifically, students will be exposed to intensive reading skills which include skimming and scanning, recognizing structures and mechanics used in texts, summarizing and evaluating texts. By exposing them to a variety of reading materials and short stories, extensive reading strategies are introduced to create enjoyable reading experiences outside the classroom and to enrich and strengthen their knowledge of words. In addition speaking and listening skills are integrated into the course to help students perform effectively and competently in the social and academic interaction. This course aims to raise their proficiency.

INTEGRATED LANGUAGE SKILLS III (ELC231)

This course is designed to equip students with the necessary writing skills to help them improve their written English. This is conducted by integrating reading, speaking skills with the emphasis is on writing skills. This course also aims to equip students with the necessary skills to discuss arguments and issues effectively. It focuses on enhancing the students’ abilities to use the language by exploiting a variety of materials in varied situations. Appropriate consideration is given to the development of higher-level grammatical construction and vocabulary expansion which are intended to help increase students’ lexical density.


DEGREE

ENGLISH FOR CRITICAL ACADEMIC READING (ELC501)

This course is designed to develop students’ ability to read analytically and think critically. It focuses on the relationship between reading and critical thinking and provides students with a structured method for interpreting content and organisation of written texts. Tasks and activities suggested are discipline-based.

ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC WRITING (ELC550)

This course focuses on developing students’ ability to write academic texts. It provides students with a structured method for paraphrasing, summarising and organising the content of written texts. This course also enhances students’ critical thinking skills to synthesise and evaluate academic texts using a standardised reference/ citation format.

ENGLISH FOR ORAL PRESENTATIONS (ELC590)

This is a course for students to develop the strategies and skills necessary for effective oral presentations. Guidance is provided from the preparatory right up to the final stage of delivery. Emphasis is placed on the importance of verbal and non-verbal communication skills and using visual aids appropriately in oral presentations. Students will also be taught to anticipate and respond to questions and comments orally during a question and answer session.

ENGLISH FOR PROFESSIONAL INTERACTION (ELC650)

This course is designed to equip students with interpersonal skills necessary to help them focus on their personal growth and development as professional individuals. By introducing students to language functions essential for developing interpersonal skills, the course is designed to help them to communicate and interact in the workplace. Specifically, students will be exposed to a wide range of language norms and conventions that are used daily to interact with individuals and groups in the workplace. This course aims to equip students with core communication skills for both interpersonal and workplace communication which include verbal and non-verbal communication skills, conversational skills, listening skills, clarifying skills and reflection skills. By introducing students to language functions essential for developing core communication skills, the course is designed to develop their interaction skills specifically in the areas of working in groups and teams, questioning and negotiating, problem solving and decision making in a wide range of professional tasks and interpersonal contexts. Overall, the focus is on developing students’ interpersonal skills which will allow them to manage interactions with others in a positive manner. Students are encouraged to adopt a communicative approach when using the language.They are provided opportunities to observe and develop competency in interpersonal skills through activities like role plays, group discussions, video critiques, case studies and work-related simulations.

ENGLISH FOR REPORT WRITING (EWC661)

This course teaches students how to develop a range of essential written communication skills using common report writing conventions to produce an effective investigative report. In doing so, it also enables students to further improve their skills in retrieving and eliciting information related to the issue at hand. Besides that, it provides a platform for students to inform and persuade when presenting a proposal. In tandem, it reinforces teamwork skills through establishing good rapport among the team members throughout the report preparation. At the end of the course, students will collaboratively produce the report which has great quality, clarity and impact.

JAPANESE

TJC101 (FOUNDATION JAPANESE LEVEL I)

This is the first of a three part programme for Japanese Language Course. The syllabus ranges from the basic Japanses structures to cultured information. It helps to equip the students with basic communicative competence. This course also introduces some basic Japanese Cultural elements to the students.

TJC151 (FOUNDATION JAPANESE LEVEL II)

This is the second of a three part program for Japanese language course. Katakana characters will be introduced. The syllabus ranges from the basic Japanese structures to cultured information. It helps to equip the students with introductory communicative competence.

TJC201 (FOUNDATION JAPANESE FOR TOURISM LEVEL I)

This is the third of a four parts program for the foundation Japanese Language course. The syllabus ranges from the basic Japanese structures to cultured information. It helps to equip the students with basic communicative competence for them to use the language in their working area. Reading and writing skills are in Romanized script.

TJC251 (FOUNDATION JAPANESE FOR TOURISM LEVEL II)

This is the last of a four parts program for the foundation Japanese Language course. The syllabus ranges from the basic Japanese structures to cultured information. MANDARIN

TMC101 (FOUNDATION MANDARIN LEVEL I)

The Foundation Mandarin course is intended for students who have no background in Mandarin or any character-based language. This is the first of a two level Mandarin Language program designed specifically for diploma students. The students will be taught appropriate elementary level vocabulary and grammar. The course will emphasize greatly on developing participants oral communication skills in situational contexts through class activities such as role plays, simulations and other relevant oral tasks. Students are expected to take part in all language activities conducted in class to ensure success in attaining the elementary level proficiency. In this course, students will be introduced to the Hanyu Pinyin system. In addition, Chinese culture will also be introduced in this course.

TMC151 (FOUNDATION MANDARIN LEVEL II)

This is the second of a two-level Mandarin Language programme designed specifically for UiTM Diploma students majoring in Hotel and Tourism Management. TFC203 (FOUNDATION FRENCH FOR HOTEL MANAGEMENT LEVEL I)

This is the first of a two semester French Language course designed specifically for Diploma students (Hotel and Tourism Management). This course includes an integration of the four language skills using appropriate situational contexts with emphasis on daily situational communication in the hospitality industry.

TFC253 (FOUNDATION FRENCH FOR HOTEL MANAGEMENT LEVEL II)

This is the second of a two semester French Language course designed specifically for Diploma students (Hotel and Tourism Management). This course includes an integration of the four language skills using appropriate situational contexts in the hotel and tourism industry. The students will acquire the necessary skills through language functions and grammar.

TFC202 (FOUNDATION FRENCH FOR CULINARY ARTS LEVEL I)

This is the first of a two-semester French language course designed specifically for students pursuing the Diploma in Culinary Arts of the Faculty of Hotel and Tourism Management, UiTM. This course includes an integration of the four language skills which will enable students to develop a satisfactory level of fluency and confidence in using French as a functional tool for social interaction and communication. Students are required to pass this course as part of the university requirement.

TFC252 (FOUNDATION FRENCH FOR CULINARY ARTS LEVEL II)

This is the second of a two-semester French language course designed specifically for students pursuing the Diploma in Culinary Arts of the Faculty of Hotel and Tourism Management, UiTM. This course includes an integration of the four language skills which will enable students to develop a satisfactory level of fluency and confidence in using French as a functional tool for social interaction and communication. TAC401 (INTRODUCTORY ARABIC LEVEL I)

This course is the first stage of the Introductory Level of the Arabic Language programme. Students taking this course are exposed to the vocabulary, grammar and Arabic phrases as well as introductory conversational Arabic in daily situational contexts. Cultural elements are also incorporated in the course. Emphasis is given to consolidating the four communication skills, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. The course aims to equip students with the ability to communicate using simple Arabic phrases relevant to foundation level.

TAC451 (INTRODUCTORY ARABIC LEVEL II)

This course is the second stage of the Introductory Level of the Arabic Language programme. Students taking this course are exposed to the vocabulary, grammar and Arabic phrases as well as intermediate level conversational Arabic in daily situational context. Cultural elements are also incorporated in the course. Emphasis is given to consolidating the four communication skills, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. The course aims to equip students with the ability to communicate using more complex Arabic phrases relevant to intermediate level.

TAC501 (INTRODUCTORY ARABIC LEVEL III)

This course is the third stage of the Introductory Level of the Arabic Language programme. Students taking this course are exposed to the vocabulary, grammar and Arabic phrases as well as basic conversational Arabic in daily situational contexts. The Introductory Mandarin Language course is intended for students who have no background in Mandarin or any character-based language. This is the first of a three-level Mandarin Language programme designed specifically for UiTM Bachelor Degree students. The students will be taught appropriate introductory level vocabulary and grammar. The course will emphasize greatly on developing participants oral communication skills in situational contexts through class activities such as role plays, simulations and other relevant oral tasks. Students are expected to take part in all language activities conducted in class to ensure success in attaining the elementary level proficiency. In this course, students will be introduced to the Hanyu Pinyin system. In addition, Chinese characters and Chinese culture will also be introduced in this course.

FRENCH

TFC401 (INTRODUCTORY FRENCH LEVEL I)

This course is the first stage of the Introductory Level of the French Language programme. Students taking this course are exposed to the vocabulary, grammar and French phrases as well as basic conversational French in daily situational contexts. Cultural elements are also incorporated in the course. Emphasis is given to consolidating the four communication skills, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. The course aims to equip students with the ability to communicate using simple French phrases relevant to foundation level.

TFC451 (INTRODUCTORY FRENCH LEVEL II)

This is the second of a three semester French language course designed specifically for students in the Bachelor’s degree programme at UiTM where a pass in the third language is a university requirement. This course includes an integration of the four language skills which will enable students to develop a satisfactory level of fluency and confidence in using French as a functional tool for social interaction and communication. Verbal and non-verbal communication skills are taught with visual aids. Students are also taught to anticipate and respond to questions appropriately. This course also provides relevant cultural and social elements.

TFC501 (INTRODUCTORY FRENCH LEVEL III)

This is a course for students to develop the strategies and skills necessary for effective oral presentations and basic written skills. This course enables students to develop a satisfactory level of fluency and confidence in using French as a functional tool for social interaction and communication. Students also learn some aspects of French culture and civilization.


GERMAN

TGC401 (INTRODUCTORY GERMAN LEVEL I)

This course is the first stage of the Introductory Level of the German Language. This course is designed for undergraduates who intend to equip themselves with a basic knowledge of spoken and written German. It will also enable them to develop a satisfactory level of oral fluency and confidence in using German as a functional tool of social interaction and communication.

TGC451 (INTRODUCTORY GERMAN LEVEL II)

This course is the second stage of the Introductory Level of the German Language. This course is designed for undergraduates who intend to equip themselves with a introductory knowledge of spoken and written German. It will also enable them to develop a satisfactory level of oral fluency and confidence in using German as a functional tool of social interaction and communication.

TGC501 (INTRODUCTORY GERMAN LEVEL III)

This course is the third stage of the Introductory Level of the German Language. This course is designed for undergraduates who intend to equip themselves with a introductory knowledge of spoken and written German.
